The Bird of Prey Project Cavity Nesting Species programme monitors four key species, including three native owls – Barn Owls, Tawny Owls and Little Owls. Whist most of the monitoring happens in the summer, we’re still busy in the winter, checking and maintaining nest boxes and gathering more data on the over-wintering birds…
Over the winter the cavity nesting species programme is a little bit quieter, but we’re still trying to build a picture of some of the wildlife that might be hanging around the sites we’ve been monitoring!
Alice headed out to one of our nest box sites last week to install a trail camera. Sometimes we can catch a glimpse of a wild bird, but sometimes you don’t quite get the footage you’re hoping for. So we’ll see what turns up soon
Gathering information about the species activity helps us build a greater idea of how to improve habitats on the small scale, whilst giving that data to larger national monitoring and conservation networks too.
Did you know that two adult day visits to The Bird of Prey Project funds a fieldwork trip for Alice?
Also… How did she end up in a field full of cows? No one knows.
Our mission is to restore habitats, conserve birds of prey and make wildlife accessible to all.

This time of year, many of our cavity nesting species will spend their days and evenings when not hunting, roosting and surveying their territory. Either from the trees, or a convenient fence post. A trail cam is a safe, non-invasive way of monitoring this!
